About forty years ago there was a popular movie titled “Born Free” in which a lion cub raised as a pet needed to be taught how to live in the wild and set free. In some ways, this is also the story of mankind, for we have been born under the bondage of a sin nature and need to be set free. One only has to observe the natural development of a child to realize that at a very early age they need to be taught to be good and obey; they don’t need to be taught to lie, but to tell the truth. Have you ever felt like Paul who said,” for I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am ever doing”. (Rom. 7:19) “0 wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of death?”(v. 24) Where does one find freedom? John 8:38 says, “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”. Free? Free from what? “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin”. (v.34) A servant (or slave) of sin is not free to do what he wants. He yields to what his sin commands him to do. He is in bondage and needs the truth. Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”. By Jesus, the truth, there is liberty, or the freedom not to be bound to your sins. The world today, full of wars and rumors of wars, hatred, diseases, and death is an inhospitable abode, but Jesus has come, that we, through belief in him, can also say like Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”. (John 16:33) Are you caught by bad habits? Is there a sin in your life that continually holds you in bondage? Do you do things just to be accepted by your friends though down deep in your heart you really don’t enjoy them? You need to be set at liberty and you can be. John 8:36 says,” If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”. Seek after the liberty and peace that comes from Jesus for we have all been born to be free.
